What does Facebook know about you really?

Facebook is aware of almost everything a mobile devices users does online, and is capable of monitoring informations and datas of its users. But what does Facebook really knows about you and how can these informations and datas be used against you?

Up to date, hackers have obtained the social security numbers of more than 400 million in the world. Is it still safe to use Facebook? The main issue here is for Facebook users to understand severity of such. For example, once you have signed into Facebook page, you need to fill up personal information about yourself. So the question here is, do you really feel safe to have Facebook obtain your personal information?

The below graph shows the percentage of people from different age range feel about having their personal information being send overseas. As we can see from the graph, majority of the people are concerned about having their personal information being sent overseas.

What are the things that Facebook knows about you?

  1. Facebook know about you, your family and your friends are. Your Facebook profile is your onsite behaviour, it covers your personal information, what advertisement you’ve clicked on and all the events you’ve created and attended to. This allows the company to be able to guess your gender, age and educational level. Besides, Facebook also knows who else is in your family, where they live, when is their birthdays are and even their upcoming anniversaries.
  2. Facebook knows about which website you visited and what apps you used. Facebook online tracking is not limited to social media site alone. If you ever visit Facebook Pixel, both Facebook and the publishers can track the users. Advertisers use this information to craft ads for those people who have used the mobile app or visited the website.
  3. Facebook knows where you are and where have you been? This informations are revealed by the IP address of where you have connected to on the GPS, internet and location services on your phone. Facebook says only we can see this histories, but that is not entirely true. It has an option to share locaiton with your friends to see who is nearby. Also, Facebook offer tools to developers to help advertisers target their customers through the access of their location.

With that being said, Facebook is a big company that has millions of users all around the world and offers free services. Users paying for services is not Facebook’s main source of funding, the company makes its money from advertising. For example, some people do not use Facebook due to privacy concerns. However, those same people that uses Google, also have the same amount of informations collected.

Facebook might not be for everyone, however, not having a Facebook account does not mean the end of the world. It is your choice to decide if you want to use Facebook or not and how much information you wish to share.

  1. Personally I feel like facebook is the birth of all other social medias. It is the mother of social medias. As it is one of the oldest and most popular social media platform out there. Although the younger generation may not be as active on facebook as they used to in the past. Large majority of people still has their facebook app installed in their smartphones and still pop by every once in awhile. For example, facebook also helps me to remember the birthdates of my friends and is always sharing endless streams of videos to keep me captivated for hours. In a way we will always be connected to facebook and facebook will never stop learning about us.

  2. After reading this article, it has made me realised that everything we do have been indirectly connected with facebook. It can go from creating another social media account to playing games or watching videos online. Everywhere we go on the internet, many sites seems to be asking if we would like to connect our facebook account. Although not many people may be using facebook directly, facebook still manages to find its ways to connect with us on other platforms. It is scary yet impressive at the same time. I guess it may not be possible to track exactly what facebook knows about us, but one thing’s for sure, is that facebook definitely knows more about us than we know.

  4. In my opinion, although facebook isn’t as glorious as it used to be back in the days, many people from around us still connected to facebook and the last time i checked, facebook is still the number one most popular social media platform. It is so user friendly as well as a great platform for you to share your thoughts and amusing videos online. But if your main concern is whether facebook knows too much about you or not, the truth is I believe that facebook does know a lot more about you and than you’d know it. It has access to so much informations regarding your personal lives. For example, your contacts, your address, your date of birth, your preference of videos, and the same goes to family and friends. I do not think that there’ll be any direct influence on your life, however, it is still advisable not to leak too much personal information of yourself online and always be cautious on the internet.

  5. n this digital age, I feel that it has become such a norm to have your personal information found online. With everything being so accessible online, it is hard not to have your personal information given to the internet. With facebook being such an established and well recognised company, to a certain extend I feel that it is still quite safe to have facebook acquiring your personal informations. However, do so only at your own risk, and it is still wiser as to not fully disclose your personal information online at all times.
